4 Steps in Understanding How to Prevent Vision Loss

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision – Helen Keller”

A critical part in everyone’s life and something which most of us take for granted, is our eyesight and how healthy our eyes are. The greatest fear for all of us is that one day we may lose our vision. There are many ways that we can take care of our health and our eyesight early in life.

Around the age of 40, most people begin to notice that their eyes are changing and that they may not be able to focus.  There are many steps that we can take to care for our vision and we have listed a few in this article.

4 Steps in Understanding How to Prevent Vision Loss

First Step:

One of the easiest ways to ensure that you are looking after the health of your eyes is to have an eye exam every one to two years. One of the most common conditions, known as “the sneak thief of sight”, is Glaucoma.  This condition can be easily diagnosed by a Doctor if regular tests are performed.  Diabetes is another condition that may be diagnosed with an eye exam.

Second Step:

Our bodies need nutritional supplements to carry on a healthy life.  Eating fruits and vegetables is beneficial for your eyes as well as your body. No surprise right!

The risks of certain eye diseases, such as macular degeneration and cataracts can be reduced with proper nutrition and supplements.

Many nutrients may aid in proper eye health, such as Vitamins A, C and E, Zinc and Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil).

Third Step:

Protect your eyes from ultraviolet  light.  UV light can damage the collagen tissues that are present in our skin but can also affect the eyes.  Although most dermatologists only talk about protecting our skin from the UV light with sunscreen, we must consider protecting our eyes with sunglasses.  The most effective way is the use of 100% UV blocking sunglasses and choose a larger lense to protect a larger surface of your face and eyes.

Fourth Step:

If you are a smoker, this may be the time to start looking at a program that will help you to quit.  Research has found that smokers are more susceptible to eye disease.  The Physicians Health Study determined that there was a link between cigarette smoking and the incidence of cataracts.  There are so many over-the-counter aids  that may increase your success rate of quitting and also cut down on the cravings.

We can certainly cut the risks of disease with a healthy lifestyle that does include proper diet, exercise and supplements.  Certain habits and behaviors of unhealthy lifestyles have been linked to health problems and if we can incorporate a few preventative measures in our daily routine, we may elevate health problems later in life.
