Welcome back, this is Jane Brown. I am so happy to have you back to read a few more tips on how to improve the health of your thyroid.
Once you have discovered that you may have a thyroid problem, there are many ways that you can improve your health through adjusting your food intake with the proper nutrients and minerals that are found in foods and supplements.
Essential fatty acids may help prevent proteins from becoming hyperactive and trigger various immune reactions.
Essential fatty acids are critical in three ways to a healthy functioning thyroid:
- They are required for the structure of every membrane of every cell
- They increase energy levels in the cell
- Omega 3’s, may improve the body’s ability to detect and respond to thyroid hormone effectively
Fatty acids are the main component in our cell membranes and aid in keeping the cells healthy. So if you want to have healthy cells, you should make sure that you are consuming the right essential fatty acid supplements into your system.
If the cells become deficient, then there is a chance of inflammation of the thyroid or other health issues. Your body can not produce essential fatty acids, therefore, you must get them through diet or supplements.
Two types of Essential Fatty Acids are:
- Omega 3 – this can be sourced from fish (mackerel, tuna, flounder, sardines, salmon, rainbow trout, bass), flax seeds and oil, black currant and pumpkin seeds, cold liver oil, shrimp, oysters, leafy greens, soybeans, walnuts etc.
- Omega 6 – (Use sparingly) – this can be sourced from sesame, safflower, cotton, and sunflower seeds and oil, corn / corn oil, soybeans, raw nuts, legumes, leafy greens, black currant seeds, evening primrose oil, soybeans etc.
5 Benefits of Essential Fatty Acids:
- The body is able to metabolize stored fat more efficiently
- Helps joints and muscles
- Reduces appetite
- Supports healthy function of blood sugar & blood pressure
- Keeps hair, skin and nails healthy
Many people need to eat more foods consisting of omega 3 fatty acids, and most can benefit from taking omega 3 fatty acids each day. However, do limit intake of the omega 6 fatty acids. Fats that are hydrogenated are metabolized differently by our bodies. Basically, the conversion process of the good fats is blocked by the bad fats.
